Vacation on the farm

2014-09-21_Slovenia_163Finally… The first vacation since November 2013 and the first trip outside China for Carsten in 6 months. The plan was quite simple: A wedding in Gothenburg, a day at the office in Copenhagen, 2 weeks in Slovenia and a roadtrip in Denmark before returning to China. Everything went as planned and we had a great time – thanks to everybody we met during the three weeks.

The main event during the vacation was the first visit to our wine farm after we acquired it this spring. Initially we bought the property with the main purpose of ” to make wine”, but after spending some time there we have found out that it is so much more. The sunset over the valley, the great neighbors, the friends and family who visit us and the smile on their faces when they stay there. It is our little piece of paradise and we are looking forward to have time to go there more often.

But you are probably still wondering about the wine. Well, let us just say that the 2014 vintage will be a limited edition. Slovenia and Northern Italy have had the worst wine year in 50 years due to too much rainfall and too little sun. The excessive amount of rain means that the grapes grows mold and basically becomes rotten. This have led to the fact that we had to handpick and sort all grapes and our yield has been below 5% of a normal year. Anyway, it was really fun to be a part of the whole process and right now our fine wine is fermenting in a steel tank in the basement of the farm in Slovenia with our neighbors looking after it.

After the short harvest and the following celebration we had time to enjoy the rest of the time in Slovenia. The days were spent working in the garden (including excessive use of power tools), chatting with our neighbors, barbecuing civapcici, drinking wine in the sunset and have good times with the friends who visited us (thanks to <Maans, Mikkel, Bodil, Thomas and Julie).

Needless to say we left Slovenia feeling that we have made the best investment in our lives. We are looking forward to spend many more joyful days in Trska Gora with our friends and family.

If any of you (or anyone you know) would like to have an out of the ordinary vacation, you are always welcome to stay in our little home in Slovenia. No rent, just make sure you have a good time and if you feel like it, you can do a small donation to local charity.
