Along Highway 1

7april_060Leaving the celebrities and LA behind, we headed north up the famous ”Highway 1”, which follows the west coast all the way to Canada. Even though our monster of a car likes to consume large quantities of petrol, it is still SOOO cheap to drive in the US. At around 90 cents (DKK 4.50) per litre it is surprisingly cheap to fill up a tank. Americans are of course complaining over outrageous high fuel prices – well maybe you shouldn’t have bought that Hummer then ;-).

That being said, USA has been a very pleasant experience. There are a lot of beautiful and cosy villages along the coast and everybody is very helpful and friendly. Our first stop was Solvang, a small Danish colony in the middle of nowhere. When driving into the village, the first you notice is Danish flags all over the streets. Besides, streets and stores all have some kind of Danish names. It even said “lukket” on the toilet :-). We did try to find some Danish rye bread (the American version of rye bread is what we refer to as French bread :-)) but it was unfortunately not possible. One of the highlights on the trip along the coast has been San Francisco; we spent two nights in this lovely city. After having ticked off the Golden Gate Bridge and the Cable Cars we just wandered around the streets and sucked up the amazing atmosphere. There were so many lovely restaurants and shops everywhere :-). We continued the trip further north, leaving behind California for the more laid-back Oregon and Portland. Along the coast we spotted sea lions and whales :-).

One of the main reasons for coming to the US was to visit our good friend, Daniel, who currently is working in Portland. We have stayed with him for the last three days and he has shown us some amazing places in Portland.

The last three days in Oregon will be spent cruising around in Portland and surroundings and skiing on Mt. Hood before we head toward the state of Washington and Seattle. On Saturday, we will fly to our last stop on our trip, New York, where we are meeting up with Mia, one of Danielle’s good friends.

Take care back home, make sure the weather improves and see you all soon!
