Barefoot on Mafia

IMG_1749Last update! We have now been away for almost a month and enjoyed every second of this trip to eastern Africa. During the last week, we have been on the island of Mafia, which is situated outside the southern coastline of Tanzania. Think Zanzibar 30 years ago; secluded beaches, almost no tourists and genuine African hospitality. Well, it sounds like a guidebook :-).

We spend the week on the western side of the island in a small lodge situated right on the beach. Swimming, eating excellent food and walking along the beach (no other tourists) were the main activities. We did however find time to take some trips in the lodge’s dhow, the local fishing boat. The trips included snorkelling on the nearby reefs and swimming with whale sharks. It was truly an amazing, and scary, experience to swim beside those gentle giants, who easily can fit the better part of your body in their mouth…

We are now sitting in the airport of Dar Es Salaam, waiting on the boarding call for our flight to Amsterdam. It has truly been a fabulous trip and we hope that you have enjoyed reading about it!

Until next time… Take care :-).
