The Zanzibar Experience

Photo_309Finally! We have now been away from cold, cold Scandinavia for almost a week and it has been amazing! Zanzibar, – and our lodge – , is indeed everything we imagined, which means that the last week have been a sequence of chilling at the pool, drinking local brew, take a stroll at the beach and enjoying the good local cuisine.

The beginning of the trip was however quite an adventure!

Everyone who has been to Africa knows that the standard of African air traffic is non-comparable to what we are use to in the western world. This did result in a rather hectic half hour in Nairobi Airport (no boarding calls or flat-screens showing departure gates :-)) and a lost luggage (Danielle¡¦s) when we arrived at Zanzibar. All this in spite of the fact that we, and our trip, on the plane from Amsterdam to Nairobi, were loudly blessed by an Italian Priest on his way to Burundi to teach Theology :-).

The bag has however arrived and the merciless Zanzibarian sun has turned our milky-white Scandinavian skin into a nice red tan. In our busy schedule of doing nothing we have succeeded to squeeze in a good snorkelling trip (nice fish and good visibility) and a tour to the local spice-farm, where we learned a lot about local produce and history. It was interesting to see and taste how the spices we use everyday looks like and grows. Zanzibar is a big exporter of spices and is often referred to as the spice-island.

After a wonderful stay in Zanzibar, it is now time to head for the mainland, which also will mark the start of our wildlife experiences. We hope that you all have a wonderful time at home and that you enjoy our photos.
