Serengeti and Ngorongoro

IMG_1583Since the last update, we have had a wonderful time. After a one day stopover in Arusha, we jumped in a 4×4 heading for a safari in Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Serengeti is known to be the greatest safari destination in the world and home to the famous “annual big migration”, where more than a million wildebeests migrate long distances in search for water and the greenest grass! The Ngorongoro crater is a large collapsed volcano, a world heritage site and is known to have the highest concentration of predators in the world.

A 5 day camping safari with a small company was pre-booked. This included our own 4×4 vehicle, a guide and a cook. The food was superb, – very impressive considering the fact that we were camping in the middle of nowhere. The camping grounds were little more than an opening in the trees and a toilet. This also meant that all animals could enter and leave the camping grounds at will. Therefore, we had visitors just outside our tent every night (lions, hyenas and elephants). We were told that as long as we stayed in the tents, there would be no problems…. Thanks.

We had 2 game drives every day and we saw pretty much any animal you can imagine. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hippos, rhinos, buffalos, crocodiles… You name it… And of course THE BIG FIVE. Please see photos.

After a wonderful safari, our next stop is Kampala, the capital of Uganda. This will be the base for the exciting 6 day Rwanda/Uganda tour, which includes Gorilla trekking! But first we have an 18 hour bus ride to look forward to :-).

Take care back home.
