Relaxing in Cape Town and exploring the wine lands

upload3After a(nother) long drive from Namibia, we spent 9 wonderful days in and around Cape Town. As always, Danielle had arranged a unique accommodation for us all – this time in a fantastic house on the mountain slopes of Simons Town (30 Ks south of Cape Town). The house had a fantastic view over False Bay and of course a plunge pool in the garden ☺.

The main purpose of the stay was to settle down, unwind and fully enjoy the fantastic Western Cape of South Africa by relaxing on white sandy beaches and cruise along beautiful mountain roads. We did however also manage to squeeze in some tours and activities during our stay, including:
– Visit to Robben Island, where Mandela was held captive as a political prisoner during the apartheid regime. It was very interesting, and eye opening, with an informative ex-prisoner as our guide.
– Gondola ride to the top of Table Mountain with a fantastic view of Cape Town and surroundings.
– Trip to Cape of the Good Hope National park.
Cape Agulhas – the Southernmost point of the African continent, where we also visited a wonderful vineyard on the way back.
Helicopter ride over Cape Town with fantastic views of the city, Table Mountain and the waters surrounding the area. What an experience!
– Last, but not least, we spent a night in Stellenbosch, the area around the city produces some of South African best wines and obviously the trip included visits to several vineyards and wineries with associated cellar tour and tasting.

During the stay in Simons Town, we also had visits from Daniel and Annette, Danielle and Carstens friends, currently receding in Cape Town and Carstens sister, Charlotte, and her boyfriend, Martin. They joined us for dinners and small day tours. It is always extra nice to share your great experiences with your family and friends. The perfect setup with our own house and the possibility to cook our own food made these days really enjoyable.

However, all good things have an end and unfortunately we have just said good-bye to Southern Africa and embarked our planes to Scandinavia. We can all agree that the last three weeks have been full of amazing experiences, from unique wildlife and sand dunes, to metropolitan life and wine tasting. Now it is time to go back to real life, but we can always close our eyes and dream of the wonderful times spent in Southern Africa in January 2011.

Hope you all enjoyed following our trip here on tiddelipom.dk and thank you for all the posts in the guestbook.

Love from us all.
