Leaving Africa….

Anyone who has tried to sit in a bus for 20 hours knows how we felt when we arrived in Cape Town, there are things in life that are more exciting! Our spirits were however immediately lifted by the wonderful city that we arrived in. Situated at the tip of Africa, and squeezed in between the impressive Table Mountain range and beautiful sandy beaches, it is hard to imagine a better or more enchanting location. Adding to the amazing scenery is the interesting culture and history of the South Africans. We spend a couple of days in Cape Town sucking in the vibe, discovering the city (and beaches :-)) and hiked in the mountains.

With a rental car, we decided to visit the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point south of the city, before continuing to Africa’s most famous wine district, Stellenbosch. Like in a fairytale, we cycled over the hills and through the vineyards, occasionally stopping to taste some of their wines.

The trip continued along the Garden Route, which follows the coast of the Western Cape of South Africa. The route is famous for the scenic roads, beautiful beaches and cosy costal villages. We spend a couple of days working on our tan, eating good food (believe it or not, Carsten actually ordered prawns one night) and cruising in our rental vehicle. One day we decided to take the car for a spin and went down to visit the southernmost point of the African continent (not very impressive, just a sleepy village and some rocks – but we got the photo :-)). The last stop on the route was in Jeffery’s bay, whose population mainly consists of blonde longhaired surfer-dudes waiting for the perfect wave (we were almost accepted as a part of the community due to Carsten’s long curly locks :-)).

Before leaving Africa, one highlight still remained: Visiting the Addo Elephant Park. As the name suggests there were tons of elephants in various sizes and shapes (same colour though :-)). Quite an experience to sit in our rental car with 60+ wild elephants hanging out next to us. The safari also gave Danielle the opportunity to check off the last of the Big Five when a buffalo was spotted.

We are now sitting at the airport in Jo’burg waiting for our flight to depart for Sydney. We just checked on the internet, it is sunny and 27 degrees in the city down under :-).
